Neighbourhood Relationships

Home Plate Food Bank

Picture

Home Street Mennonite Church is a community
drop-off point for Winnipeg Harvest, the city-wide food bank. Volunteers from the congregation staff Home Plate from 4 to 6  p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. Only people who have registered their need for food hampers with Winnipeg Harvest can pick up their food at Home Plate.

Coffee and Conversation

Picture

Every Sunday morning throughout the year, Home Street volunteers provide a simple Sunday morning breakfast for folks who wish to drop by for coffee,
tea, sandwiches and conversation. We seek to
provide a safe, caring and accepting environment
for our visitors. We do not distribute emergency
food on Sunday mornings.

Settler-Indigenous Relations

Home Street is committed to the journey of decolonization and reconciliation. An Indigenous Settler Relations Group meets regularly and gives leadership to this journey. We read Indigenous authors, attend Indigenous-led events, and show up at gatherings where Indigenous concerns are given expression. We support advocacy for Indigenous rights, and we explore ways in which our congregation can foster right relations between Indigenous and Settler peoples. The ISRG's mission is "to live out the vision of Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), honouring the spirit of the historical treaties between the Canadian government and Indigenous nations."

Climate Action

Home Street’s Climate Action Group seeks to involve our congregation in pursuing climate justice. Together we are learning to care for the earth, to confess the harms we have done to creation, and to seek ways of restoring the earth. We are currently working at greening our church building, establishing a “goods and services exchange,” and advocating for action on climate change.

Global Connections

China

We support efforts to grow Anabaptist study groups in China through Mennonite Partners in China, a program of Mennonite Church Canada Witness. George Veith develops curricula on Anabaptist theology, discipleship and conflict resolution, while Tobia Veith teaches as a university English instructor. Jeanette Hanson fosters educational exchanges between Mennonites in North American and Chinese educational institutions and Christian communities. More information is available below.

Israel/Palestine

We participate in efforts to build a just peace for Palestinians and Israelis through prayer, education and advocacy. In response to a resolution passed by Mennonite Church Canada in 2016, we work for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land and oppression of Palestinian people. We discourage economic practices and policies that perpetuate the occupation. We engage our own government representatives in supporting international law and human rights in the region. More information is available below.
